Father Raphael (Morris), C.P. WE regret to announce the death of Rev. Fr. Raphael (Morris). C.P., which occurred on October 1st at Holy Cross Retreat, Ardoyne, Belfast, after a brief illness of only a few hours duration. Known in the world as Patrick Morris. Fr. Raphael was born in Dublin on March 22nd, 1861. As a youth he was for some time employed with a world-famous commercial undertaking in his native city. At the age of twenty-three he sought admission to the Passionist Congregation, and made his profession at St. Saviour’s Retreat, Broadway, Worcs., on November 25th, 1885. His ecclesiastical studies were made at St. Joseph’s Retreat Highgate, London, where, he was raised to the priesthood on June 15th. 1899. Fr. Raphael celebrated the Golden Jubilee of his ordination three years ago, and received many messages of congratulation from far and near. SUBSEQUENTLY to his ordination, Fr. Raphael. was attached to various communities of the former Anglo-Hibernian Province, including London, Birmingham and Glasgow. He volunteered his services for the distant Australian mission, and for many years laboured zealously in the cause of souls beneath the Southern Cross. At a time when means of communication were often rough and primitive, Fr. Raphael would set off for a long round of bush parishes, where he would attend to the spiritual needs of scattered Catholic communities. For the past twenty-five years Fr. Raphael was a member of the community of Holy Cross Retreat, Ardoyne, Belfast. In the parish he was a familiar and well-beloved figure, and many a one who sought his aid and counsel in spiritual difficulties has cause to remember and to bless the name of Fr. Raphael. Until advancing years rendered it impossible, he was assiduous in attending his confessional, and the throng of penitents that invariably surrounded it was an eloquent tribute to his unfailing patience and charity. The horrors of modern warfare had troubled his declining years. With his own eyes he had seen the havoc wrought by the repeated “blitz” in Belfast.. It was his prayer that he might be spared another such visitation. God, in His mercy, has answered that prayer in His own mysterious way. Without any long illness or tedious infirmity, Fr. Raphael quietly passed away. Active almost to the last day of his life, just as he himself would have wished, he is now enjoying the reward promised by the Master to those who are faithful servants in the Vineyard of the Lord.
