Fr. Herbert (Greenan), C.P. On Easter Sunday, April 9th news came of the death of Fr. Herbert (Greenan), C.P., of St. Joseph’s Province. Born in Dublin on March 24th, 1879, Patrick John Greenan was educated by the Holy Ghost Fathers at St. Mary’s, Rathmines, and Blackrock College, Dublin. On entering the Passionist Congregation, he took the name of Herbert of St. Patrick, making his religious profession on August 13th, 1897. An outstanding missioner, Fr. Herbert was equally successful with missions for the people and with the perhaps more exacting work of retreats for clergy and religious. Gifted with more than ordinary eloquence, his sermons were remarkable as much for felicity of expression as for depth of thought. His wide knowledge of the Scriptures was evident in the copious quotations that gave unction and power to his preaching. In 1924 Fr. Herbert published “The Preachers of the Passion,” a popular exposition of the work and spirit of the Passionist Congregation, which achieved wide circulation. At various periods Fr. Herbert was stationed at Mount Argus, Dublin, at Highgate, at Ilkley – where he acted as Vicar for some years – and at Sutton, Lancs. By his death his brethren have sustained a heavy loss, and he will long be mourned by the many thousands who were sustained and inspired by his preaching of “Christ and Him crucified.” May be rest in peace.
