Dear Father .Rector. Owing to unavoidable circumstances I have been obliged to delay, longer than I should, sending you the following notice. I .regret exceedingly having to announce to you the death of the Very Rev. Father Anthony Superior, of :this Retreat at 12.30 a.m. on the 29th April, 1904, just half an hour after the Feast of our Holy Founder St.. Paul of the Cross. His death was the result of lung disease from which he had been suffering over a considerable time, Father Anthony, known in the world as John Henry Carroll, was born in Rathmines Parish, Dublin on 2nd September 1845. In his 22nd year, he entered our Novitiate, Broadway Worcestershire, and having given the necessary proofs of a religious vocation he made his profession on the 19th May 1867. He was then transferred to St Paul’s Retreat, Mount Argus, Dublin, where he pursued his philosophical and theological studies. Immediately after his ordination, he was appointed by the Provincial to this Retreat. In the discharge of his many laborious and trying duties in the Infmnaries, Institutions and Parish he displayed a singular zeal and devotedness, on account of which the parishioners one and all evinced the greatest possible regard and reverence for the young priest. It is indeed a remarkable coincidence that in the very place he commenced his spiritual labours 32 years ago it was God’s Holy will he should close his missionary life and earthly .career. After working most piously and zealously for a considerable time in St. Mungo’s Parish, the Provincial, knowing well his great energy, religious spirit, prudence and anxiety to take part in the great work of Missions, transferred him to St. Anne’s Retreat, Sutton, where Father Anthony prepared himself for Missionary work by fervent prayer and almost, uninterrupted study of the Holy Scriptures and. Fathers of the Church. As a result of this, which was always his practice, he was recognised and acknowledged not only by his brethren, but by the secular Clergy and people wherever he preached as one of the most fervent -and successful missioners in the Anglo Hibernian Province. We have good reason for believing he was instrumental in the hands of God in many parts of England, Ireland, Scotland and America in softening the hearts of sinners and saving many souls. He was conspicuously remarkable for devotion to our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and to the Immaculate Mother of Jesus Christ. After an anxious and difficult government of 23 years as Rector of Ardoyne and Superior of St.Mungo’s, Glasgow, he has left after him more than sufficient proof of his zeal and prudence, his charity and love of the beauty of God’s house and the place where His glory dwelleth. May God, through the intercession of His Blessed Mother have mercy on his soul. May Christ Jesus blot out the imperfections of his life and admit him into the Kingdom which he has prepared for him. St. Mungo’ s Retreat, Parson Street, Glasgow. July 1904.
