Holy Cross, Ardoyne, Belfast. On 25th January 1909, Bro. John Mary of St. Paul of the Cross, passed away to eternity. Although his death was sudden, he had the blessing of receiving Holy Communion the morning before his death – that Holy Communion that was his viaticum. It was noticed that on the day before his death, he was more than usually quiet, and on the evening before his death he gave expression to many pious thoughts relative to death, Bro. John Mary – in the world John Walsh – was born at Innishowen, Co, Cork, Ireland, on 23 April 1835. He was clothed in the religious habit on 8th October 1856 and was professed a lay brother on 9th October 1857. He was a religious of great simplicity and unaffected faith and piety. He laboured long and well for the up-building of the Province. The special gifts that God had given were employed in the buildings at Highgate, Mount Argus and Ardoyne. On the 26th April 1860, he went to London to commence the work of the New Church. On 19th January, 1864, he arrived at Mount Argus to take part in the New Building, and on 20th January 1880, he went to Highgate to look after the decorations of the church. On the following September he arrived in Belfast to look after the details of the New House. He was assiduous in all the duties of his state, and looked upon the events of life in the spirit of a true religious, and in the same spirit bore the infirmities of his declining years. He was very devoted to the Province, the Congregation and the glory of God. May God grant him eternal bliss as the reward of a long life spent in his love and service.
