Fr. Peter Paul of the Holy Cross (Smith) d. 17th August, 1897 A Dublin man he was born on the 14th March 1846, and baptised on 17th, so was naturally called Patrick. He was twice a CP Novice, the first time in 1863, but after 6 months was sent home, but with Fr. Ignatius Spencer backing him, he applied again to Fr. General then making Visitation at Sutton, and was readmitted. He was professed on the 13th August 1865. The first time, his religious name was Edward; on the second occasion he was Peter Paul, no doubt a link with Fr. General, Peter Paul Cayro (the first General to visit Mt. Argus, in July 1864). Fr. Salvian Nardocci says of him that he became a very good missioner, after his ordination. At. St. Mary’s Retreat, Harborne, Birminghim, he was Vice-rector from 1878 to 1881. In 1881, at the 9th Provincial Chapter of the Anglo-Hibernian Province, he was elected Rector of St. Anne’s Retreat, Sutton. His term as Rector over, he returned to Harborne as vice-Rector once again. Mt. Argus’ ‘Platea’ (Chronicles) describes his end: ‘Aug. 17 Fr. Peter Paul died about 7 a.m. Born 14th March ’46. Professed 13th Aug. ’65. Ordained 29th Sept. ’89. Aug. 19 Offiec and req. and funeral at 11. Large congregation and representative gathering of priests – secular and regular. Unmistakeably a manifestation of grief. R.I.P.’ He is buried in the 2nd grave on the right as one comes in the gate facing the path. With him is buried a namesake, Fr. Emidius Smith. Sources: Fr.
