Fr. GABRIEL of the Annunciation (John O’Hanlon) 5th Jan. 1893. The Venerable Charles’ dying at Mount Argus on the very same day, and Fr. Gabriel’s death taking place in Ardoyne 90 miles away, tended somewhat to overshadow his going to Heaven. Yet he did get a certain amount of publicity. The same page in Fr. Salvian’s ‘Newscutting’ that carries the account of the funeral services of the Ven. Charles, also has a six and a half inch one col. account of Fr. Gabriel’s death and funeral, giving in great detail just who among prominent Catholics in Belfast attended his funeral. (There are also two other cuttings: one in the ‘CP Suffrage Masses’ book, ten and a half inches in single col. from a Catholic weekly of the time ‘THE LAMP’, and another in the ‘Cuttings’, apart from the one already mentioned. He was a Co. Tyrone man, born at Clonee, on the 11th August 1839. After making his year and a day Novitiate at Broadway, Worcs., he was Professed there on the 13th of August 1865. He was ordained priest in 1869, in his 30th year. There is no OBIT of him in the Archives, so it is only from the newspapers’ accounts that we know that he served as Rector, and as a Master of Novices. He was well thought of. The Bishop (Dr. McAllister) not only presided at his Funeral Mass in Ardoyne Church, but also said the Final Prayers of Committal at the graveside. Further, it was remarked that unlike the case of the funeral of Fr. STEPHEN Magee, C.P., a few years earlier, the local Orangemen did not cause a riot! The only portrait we have of him is as a member of the 1878 Provincial Chapter, held at Highgate. He is No. 20 (4th from the right in the middle row). At that Chapter he was elected, on the first Voting, as Rector of Mount Argus. So, the brethren here have an especial reason for remembering him on his anniversary, for he was the first Rector of the newly-erected permanent church (1878; foundation-STONES: 1872 (the date on the front, and 1873, the 2nd beginning.)
