Copy of entry in the Annals of the Anglo-Hibernian Province Death of F. Angelo (Kirby) 13 October, 1882. On this day another of our Religious was taken away by death, in the Retreat of St. Paul’s, Mount Argus, Dublin. The name of this Father was Angelo of the Holy Ghost, alias Patrick Kirby. He was born in Scariff, Co. Clare, Ireland on 7th August 1844. Was clothed on 15th January, 1866 in Broadway and made his religious profession on the 15th of the same month the following year. F. Angelo was one of the best Religious in our Province. He was full of zeal and fervour for the good of souls. After his ordination, being approved for hearing confessions, for working on missions and in writing sermons, he neglected himself to such a degree as not even taking the necessary food and sleep, he began gradually to get weak, and at last got into slow consumption. The superiors, for fear of loosing him, ordered him change of air in different Retreats of the Province. For a little while he seemed to improve in his health, but as he wished to work too much wherever he was, he fell ill again into bad health, worse than before. The Superiors, wishing to save him, they sent him first to the south of France; then to Italy where imagining that he was strong enough for working amongst his countrymen, he asked the Superiors to be allowed to return to Dublin. Having obtained the necessary permission, with caution, that is to say not to work too hard and taking the necessary food and rest, he returned to Dublin. The fervent and zealous young priest, thinking that he had greater strength than before, began again to work in the confessional incessantly, in preaching, in attending the regular observance day and night, which at last the strength failed him to such degree, that he had to give up entirely the preaching, hearing confessions and to attend to the observance. The malady of consumption came upon him with greater violence and no doctor or infirmarian could do him any good. Finally on 13th October, after having received the last sacraments, he calmly rendered his soul to his Creator. RIP He was buried in our Church yard, close to St. Paul’s, Mount Argus, Dublin. The death of F. Angelo caused great regret amongst our Religious, as well amongst his friends, who had great respect for him. This is a transcript from Fr. Salvian Nardocci’s account of the death of Fr. Angelo, written in his Chronicles of the Anglo-Hibernain Province.
