BROTHER PETER (KEARNEY), C.P. With genuine regret we announce the death of Brother Peter (Kearney), C.P. His passing away took place in the early hours of Thursday morning, June 23rd, at St. Gabriel’s Retreat, The Graan, Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh. Although for some years he had been in failing health, his diligence in the performance of his duties never lessened. Indeed, in his brave carrying of the cross of his illness, he gave an example of courage and cheerfulness to all who knew him intimately. A faithful son of St. Paul of the Cross, Brother Peter had a remarkable devotion to the Holy Sacrifice, and despite his slowly ebbing strength was ever eager to serve a succession of Masses every morning of his religious life. Born in Belfast in 1904, he was professed at St. Gabriel’s Retreat on August 24th, 1931. During. the twenty-four years of his life as a professed Brother, he was stationed at St. Mary’s Retreat, Musselburgh, St. Paul’s Retreat, Mount Argus, Dublin, and finally at The Graan, Enniskillen. As Sacristan at Mount Argus, he won for himself a place in the affections, not only of his brethren in religion, but of the very many visiting priests who came to offer Holy Mass. One of the greatest joys of his life was his Marian Year visit to the Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes, where his fervour was remarked upon by not a few of his fellow pilgrims. On Saturday, June 25th, Very Rev. Father Fergus, C.P., Provincial, celebrated Solemn Requiem Mass for the repose of Brother Peter’s soul. Most Rev. E. O’Callaghan, D.D.. Bishop of Clogher, presided. May he rest in peace. (The Cross, Vol. XLVI, 1955-56; p. 89)
