REV. FR. ALPHONSUS (FARRELL), C.P. WE regret to chronicle the death, on October 12th, of Father Alphonsus (Farrell), C.P. The end came suddenly on Sunday morning just as he was about to celebrate the 10 o’clock Mass at St. Joseph’s Retreat, Highgate, London. He had performed his priestly duties to the end. Indeed he had been engaged in the confessional as usual on the day before his death. Known in the world as Patrick Francis Farrell, he was born in Loughrea, Co. Galway, in 1888. Having received his early education at the college then conducted by the Carmelite Brothers at Clondalkin, Co. Dublin, he entered the Passionist Novitiate and was professed at St. Gabriel’s Retreat, The Graan, Enniskillen, on March 15th, 1910, and seven years later received his priestly ordination at All Hallows College, Dublin. Although as a young priest he conducted several missions in this country, England was the principal field of his apostolate. During his long and fruitful life, Father Alphonsus resided in several of our English Retreats and became widely known as a missioner and retreat master. At the outbreak of the second World War he was transferred to St. Joseph’s Church, Avenue Hoche, Paris, where he remained during the German Occupation. His last years were spent at Highgate, where, following Solemn Requiem Mass, he was interred in the Community Cemetery on October 15th. Requiescat in pace. (The Cross, Vol. XLIX, 1958-59; p. 247.)
