Edward Smith (his religious name was the same) was born, the son of Constantine Smith and his wife Mary (nee Flynn) in the parish of Loughinisland, Co. Down, on the 6th June 1838.
He was professed at Broadway on All Saints’ Day 1861, in his 23rd year.
Only two years later, Fr. Salvian Nardocci wrote in the Provincial Chronicles:
“7ber 6. The Passionists of Bd. Paul’s Retreat, Mount Argus, Dublin, had to lament the
death of a most promising young student in the person of Confr. Edward of
the Holy Angels – Smith – who died of consumption at Bd. Paul’s Retreat,
Mount Argus, Dublin”
His body is in the 5th grave on the right on the central path in our cemetery here.
Cannot the words of the Book of Wisdom (4:13-14) be justly applied to him?
“Coming to perfection in so short a while, he achieved long life;
his soul being pleasing to the Lord, he has taken him quickly from the wickedness
around him.”
