Acts of the 16th Provincial Chapter of the
Anglo-Libernian Province of the Congregation
of the Most Holy Bros and Passion of Our Lord
Jesus Christ, held in St Paul's Petreat,
Mount Argens Dublin
June 1902.
In accordance with a convocatory letter of
the Very Rev d S Philip of the Invasculate
Conception Provincial dated 26 Act, 1902,
and sent to all the Rectors and superiors of
the Province, the Capitular Fathers assem-
bled in St Paul's Petreat on the 9th June 1902,
to assist at the Tridum in preparation for the
Chapter summoned for June 13th 1902.
First Meeting.
St g o'clock on the morning of June 10th the
first preliminary meeting was held. All the
Capitular Fathers were present, and after invok-
ing the Holy Spirit, Very Rev d S Malachry
was appointed Secretary of the Preliminary
Meeting. The Secretary then read a letter by
delegation from the Most Rev d S General author-
ing here Rev d S John Paplist, of the Nativity
of the Plessed Version, 2nd General Consultor, to
preside at the Provincial Chapter.
Rev J. George was appointed Custos.
The Sals of Office, Littore patenter, "Inventories
of the Petreats, together with Certificates of the
due celebration of Marses, and the keeping of
the Archives, were handed in by the Rectors
and Superiors.

appointed to examine payellar and report.
The examination of the Documents of the tredificent Retreats was committed to the box of Rev H. Mark and Very Rev H. Caprian.
The Rectors and Superiors having read the financial statement of their respective Retreats, Very Rev John Mary, and Very Rev H. Anthony were appointed to examine and report thereon. The meeting closed with the usual prayers at 12 a.m.
Second Meeting.
The Fathers assembled in the Chapter Room at 2 p.m. and the usual prayers being said, the Very Rev President enorted the Fathers to propose any subjects commented with the welfare of the Province which they considered advisable to have discussed at the Chapter. These proposals occupied most of the lesson. The oath "de receto servanda" having been administered by the Very Rev President, the Fathers spent a short time in discussing the merits of those designable for office. The meeting closed with the customary prayers at 7 p.m.
First Meeting.
The Fathers assembled at 8 o'clock.
Very Rev H. John Mary made the financial statement for Loly Grass Rebel at Ardovers, which was amaraxably postponed at the first meeting. The discussion meritorum occupied the remaining portion of the lesson until 12 o'clock, when the meeting was brought to a close with the usual prayers.
Fourth Meeting.
The decrees commentered were continued and concluded at 6 p.m. It was then considered

unadvisable to commence new business, and the session concluded with the usual prayers.
Twith Meeting.
The session commenced at 9 o'clock June 12th.
Very Rev. Dr. Placid and Dr. Rev. Dr. William testified that the "litteral patenter" of the different Petreats were duly signed from year to year. Very Rev. Dr. Fedelis, and Dr. Rev. Dr. Michael certified to the due celebration of Masses, and the Keeping of the Archives in the different Petreats.
Very Rev. Dr. John Mary and Dr. Rev. Dr. Anthony submitted their report on the forensical state of the Province. This statement was tested to with the greatest interest and satisfaction. Notwithstanding the fact that new buildings had been greeted, and property acquired at a cost of over $28,000 there was no increase of the gross debt on the Province; for, though a debt of $10,000 had to be incurred by our Belfast House, an equal serm had been baid off by other Houses in the Province.
The state of the different Petreats was next considered. The Chapter recognized the necessity of providing better accommodation for our Belfast house in Letton and Harborne, as soon as certain statements should allow. The legal status of our Paris House was also taken into consideration in view of the attered circumstances created by recent legislation.
Very Rev. Dr. Gregory made a detailed statement regarding the liberty of our Australian Foundations. The Fathers were delighted to hear of the salisfactory financial condition of the Petreats, and the incorporated prospects of our Houses in Australia since the East Chapter.

The session was brought to a close with the usual prayers at 12 o'clock.
The Lathers assembled in the Choirat 3 p. m. for bespers, after which a most appropriate discourse was delivered by the Very Rev Dr Placid, who took for his test the tords of St Paul to the Philippians.ss And the peace of God which says as the all understanding keep your hearts and minds in Christ Kesu.ss Philip IV-7. After alluding to the occasion of Merian capturing he briefly described the search of man's heart for peace in time and stereotype. The discourse then consisted in showing how our Congregation gives her children this peace by giving them the presence, the test during and the share in the work of the Incarnate God. It concluded by inviting all to join in person prayer to hear in to quide the Capitular Lathers in their charge of those who would defend and forter the true spirit of our Congregation.
Secth Mading.
On the morning of June 13th Solemn High Mass Gespiritual Lecture was seen by the Very Rev Dr Philip of the Immaculate Keept on Provincials. The rest of the Capitular Lathers, together with the Very Rev Dr President were in the Sanctuary, and the Religious Community of Mount Lizzles were present in the Church.
At 9 45 a. m. all the Capitulars, and the infine Religious Community were assembled in the Sanctuary.
The President reckled on Stole and Surplice, and hearing the Cardinals intoned the "Veseilla Regis"

which was faken up by the Religious, who then walked in processional order to the Chapter Room. Drived in the Chapter Room, the usual prayers were sense by the Very Rev President, who then in the following form designated those who, not having the active voice, the Capitular alone remaining. The Very Rev Tr President made a fervent Gadress to the Capitular Fathers, reminding them of the solemnity of the occasion. He said the eyes of the entire Province were sourding to them; and the welfare of the Province was dependent upon the selections they were about to make. As it was said of our Saviour "coepit facere et docore," so too if Superiors were to maintain the observance and strict discipline they must begin by giving good example to others. Therefore it was most important that they should elect those Religious whom they believed would give good example to others by the faithful observance of our Holy Rules.
In conclusion, the prayer had to guide and direct them; so that they should give to the Province Superiors who would carry on the work of our Holy Hunder.

Very Rev Dr Captain of the Great Blood.

The Very Rev Dr President thereintoned the "Pene Creator," the versicle and prayers following. After this he interrogated the Electors whether they considered the Chapter Causefully and canonically conversed, so that its work might be proceeded with. All having answered in the affirmation, the President in his own name, and in the name of all, protested against admitting the disqualified, and excluding those qualified from the elections of the Chapters.
After the customary acts of humility were performed by the Very Rev Dr Philip, Provincial, in his own name, and in that of the Capitulars, the Very Rev Dr President imparted the "absolutisad cautelan" to all; he himself afterwards receiving it at the hands of the Very Rev Dr Philip.
Then followed the reading of the decree "contra sollicitantes," and the prescribed Predentine decree.
The election of a Secretary was next proceeded with, the Very Rev Dr Malachy being chosen by ballot. After this, two scrutators were elected, so Very Rev Dr Lidelis, and Very Rev Dr Mark, who together with the Secretary forthwith took the Fath of secrecy and fidelity.
All these canonical requirements having been faithfully carried out, the Secretary received from the Dr President the Faculty of Publishing the scrutinies, and of praising and of publishing elections. The Verifiable Chapter then proceeded to the Election of a Provincial. At the 1st Scrutiny the Very Rev Dr Philip of the Immaculate Conception was unanimously elected.

on the decree of election was framed and published by the Secretary in the usual form. The Very Rev. Dr. Philip franticed the letters for their show of confidence in him; and professed his readiness to carry out the generous duties of the Provincialate to the best of his ability.
After this, the Religious were summoned to the Chapter Room; and the decree of election was promulgated. The "Se Deum" and Solemn Revelation of B Sacrament following.
Seventh Meeting.
At 3.30 p. mon Saturday the Fathers assembled in the Chapter Room; and, after the usual prayers, the election of the 1st Provincial Consultor was proceeded with. Very Rev. Fr. Greenary of St Joseph receiving the squeeze number of hosts at the 1st seating, Very Rev. Fr. Basil of St John the Evangelist was elected 2nd Provincial Consultor, and the Very Rev. Fr. Passions was elected Master of Novicet.
The election of the Rectors of the different Retreats resulted as follows.

Eighth Meeting.

the agenda paper. The Very Per Tr President devised the Patters to decide whether they were willing to give equivalent suffrages to the Passionist Nurs in Corneto and Marmers, viz, 1 Rosary, Discipline, and Holy Communion.
The Patters signified their willingness to do so. This arrangement to last until next General Chapter.
2. Very Per Tr Sebastian came to Chapter, and received from Very Per Tr Provincial the appointment as Chr Provincial of our Burtrailain frendations, the Capitular Patters unanimously approving the selection.
Reference was made to the annual report which should be sent by the Pectors to the Most Per Tr general; and the items to be referred to in this report. Very Per Tr Provincial undertook to have presented farms sent to the Pectors.
3. Very Per Tr President announced that Most Per Tr General had given differentiation from discipline on the East of the S. Heart until next General Chapter.
4. For the sake of uniformity, it was unanimously agreed that the "Angelus Domini" should be recited for dinner and Lapper in all our Houses. General discussion on the State of the Province followed. The surreptitious introduction of entoxicating brank into the Houses was strongly condemned, and severe measures will in future be taken against afers.
5. At the request of the Very Per Tr Provincial, Very Per Tr Placid submitted a report upon our system of Studies. He recommended that greater efficiency in Studies should be aimed at on account of the requirements of the times. He also deprecated the

loss of time involved in the employment of students in work interfering with the hours of study; and said an effort should be made to give them ample time after arrenation to prepare for the dates of the Ministery.
The Chapter reminds the Religious that over Convergention is funded in a Specit of Religious Poverty and strongly condemns the abuse of training money without permission. This subject is as considered at great lens of this and there were practical conclusions arrived at which the Provincial undertook to carry out at his visitation.
Whiten permission from the Provincial will hereafter be required for permanent dispensation from creaing sandals.
The Chapter was of opinion that the term of probation for lay Pastulants should be propped to 12 months, so that they might have a better Religious training, and a better knowledge of the dates connected with their state.
Although delaymented upon to establish an Alumni at last Chapter, circumstances made it impossible until now. Hence forth the Alumni is to be established at Barnarthen, the detach connected with the Alumni to be arranged by the Provincial and his Consultors.
In accordance with the provision of the Holy Rule the conduct of the lay brothers was taken into account, and the Rectors were excharged to carry out the prascriptions of the Rules regarding the Conferences, and the observance of the dates of their office.
The Chapter was remembered in recommending that the superiors of Glasgow and Paris should hereafter be cleared by the Chapter, as Rectors, and

petition to be made to Come to this effect. It was also agreed that it would be advisable to procure a vote at the Chapter for the Pro Provincial of Australia.
Ninth Meeting.
Session opened at 9 P. clock
The manner in which our vocal prayers were recited was discussed, and the In President charged the consciences of the Superiors that the Divine Office, and other public prayers should be recited with becoming slowness, distanceness and devotion. It was recommended also that the reading in our Refectories should always be of an edifying nature.
As the moral training of our young men is most important, and as the Directors contribute very much towards it, Rectors were requested not to employ them in external work that would interfere with the duties of their office.
A 13 days Refreat is henceforth to be given at the end of the annual vacation.
It was agreed that a meeting of the Superiors should take place once bothesh this and the reset Chapter, in about a year and a half.
Letters were read from our Australian Fathers reporting on the condition of that part of our Province, and making various refreshments regarding the responsing of the Administrate, and other matters connected with the welfare of our Australian foundations.
After an exchange of views, the General Chapter considered it advisable to commit the sitting ment of these matters to very Rev In Provincial

and his Consultant.
It was proposed by very Pro-Dr. Philip Provencial and seconded by very Pro-Dr. Gregory 1st Provencial Consultor that a cordial expression of gratitude be tendered from the Chapter to His Grace Mast Pro-Dr. Reylly Archbishop of Atland for fatherly interest and kindness to our Fathers in Australia. This resolution was ananimous by agreed to.
On the motion of very Pro-Dr. John Mary, seconded by very Pro-Dr. Anthony a symbologist of Manks was cordially passed to Mast Pro-Dr. Henry Bishop of Down and connor for granting penthusian for the building of a new Church in Ardoyre, and for the great encouragement and assistance given by him during its greetion.
Senth Meeting.
Attention of the Pectors is called to the point of Rule in regard to sending out and receiption of letters. The suppliers are rebringed to be vigilant about this matter.
Very Pro-Dr. President then interrogated the Fathers individually whether they had anything further to propose to whichall answered for the negative.
The President then confirmed the newly elected Superiors in their office with the usual formality. All the Fathers then declared their enlive satisfaction at the happy conclusion of their labours, which were carried out with the greatest commitment and cordiality.
Their tendered heartfelt thanks to Almighty God, and to Car Blessed Lady St Michael, St Joseph, and Car Holy Founder St Paul of the Cross for the Messings betrayed upon the deliberations of the 16th

Chapter of the Anglo-Lebanean Housiness.
The sets of the Chapter were then read, and approved and supervised were enjoined to attack greater importance to the reading of the sets of the Chapter and at least on the 1st occasion foread and explain them themselves in Choir.
A warm vote of thanks to the Very Per Jr. John Baptist, President of the Chapter was proposed by the Very Per Ch Philip, Provincial, decorded by Very Per Jr. Gregory 1st Provincial Consultor, and carried with Sacclamation.
Very Per Jr. President thanked the Provincial, and the Chapter for their kindly feelings towards him. The Capitulars then subscribed their names to these sets in the following order.

which was held from the 9th to the 15th day of June of this current year 1902 in the strength of the Province of St Joseph's and am glad to find mattering in them which is not in perfect conformity with the Sacred Genous, and the Rules and Bonstitutions of our Institute.
Wherefore we approve, and by our authority confirm tall and singular the provisions exacted in the said Chapter for the word of the Province and the preserving of regular disciplines and we declare and deside that all the religious of the aforesaid Province are bound to observe them just as if they had been deceed by ourselves.
