Compendium of
Decrees
Ordered to be made by the
XIV and XV
Provincial Chapters of the Province
of St Joseph.
1st
Every Religious in passing from the community of one Retreat to another must have with him the following articles of clothing:-
Two habits, one mantle, one change of religious, under clothing, two pairs of sandles, a religious and a service hat, a clerical suit, an overcoat.

each of which articles must be in good condition. In case the Religious fails to bring with him any of the above-mentioned articles, they shall be procured for him at the expense of the Rector of the house from which he departs. It is the duty of the Religious to make known in time, and humbly ask of the Superior those articles he wants at the time of departure.
2nd
Religious employed in questing shall write to the Superior every week, and they shall not be absent longer than a month except in some extraordinary case

The Religious who are appointed to visit in the parishes or districts attached to our houses are reminded that they

should visit the poor, the negligent and the sick and not show a preference for the better classes lest this important duty should degenerate into useless visits of pleasure or compliment

Religious shall return from Missions and Retreats summo mane. This point of our Holy Rule applies with equal force to those sent out for the purpose of preaching Charity Sermons or Supplying.

The monthly visit to be made by the Clerks and Lay-brothers to the Rector as prescribed in Chapter xxxii of the Holy Rule is especially to be attended to.

The Rector shall give attention to the

proper keeping of the Platea and also to the state of the Archives in their respective houses according to the tenor of our Holy Rule.
7.
Let no Rector be at liberty to change existing buildings, to suppress established or start new Confraternities or to alter the pre-existing order of services in the churches without the consent of the Father Provincial.
8.
In as much as on the proper training of the Students depends the good of the Congregation, the Directors of the Students are recommended to have great solicitude for them that they be inbued with the spirit of the Congregation. They are moreover recommended to have vigilant care

that the Students have their Spiritual conferences as ordered by the Regulations.
Let them be present as far as possible at all their recreations and carefully watch over the regular observance.
9.
The sum of 10 Growns equivalent to about £2, sterling determined by the Holy Rule (Chapter XIII) for the pennission of the Higher Superiors in expenses exceeding the said sum, is for the same effect augmented to £10.
10.
No intoxicating drinks shall be allowed to any of our Religious out of meal time, except in case of illness

Let silence be scrupulously observed during the time and in the

places prescribed by the Holy Rule.
Especially after night prayers it is forbidden to hold conversations in any part of the house. Superiors are bound to impose an exemplary penance on anyone who transgresses in this particular.
12.
Let all the priests conform to the regulation in regard to the half hour's preparation for mass and the thanksgiving afterwards, and let them bear in mind that the preparation is not to be made during Prime or Tierce. The priest who has to celebrate the last mass is dispensed from Prime and Tierce
13.
All are forbidden the use of bicycles, except with a special permission obtained from the Provincial. The same is to be said with regard to

smoking, and in no case can this be permitted in the recreation.
14.
The penalty of suspension ipso facto is incurred by any Fasher who either going to, or returning from, as well as during Missions, shall take spirits before dinner. By dinner is understood a meal taken about mid-day. The same penalty is extended to the case of those going out from the Retreat for Charity Sermons or supplies. Moreover the use of Spirits on Missions after dinner can be allowed only by the Superior and that for a grave reason. Such permission must be asked toties quoties.

It is absolutely necessary that the decree "De celebratione Missarum" and that "Contra Solicitantes" be read

be read publicly four times each year
in every house of the Province.
